It’s tough to try and predict what your child’s future will look like. Perhaps the path you’ve imagined for them is nothing like their reality. So, what can parents do to better equip their kids for the unknowable future?

The reality is, a university education just isn’t enough to guarantee their future in the professional world. Experts have highlighted some of the main skills required to “get ahead” in all areas of life, including career. We’ve compiled a list of these skills so that you can prepare your child for their future.

Soft skills

Soft skills are often referred to as interpersonal skills or non-cognitive skills because of their innate nature. More and more employers are looking at other skills you may have, apart from your working knowledge. Soft skills are transferable, which means they enhance any job title, whether you’re a beginner or at the top of your game.

Not only are soft skills great in the workplace, they’re also essential in all areas of life. Experts at Coder Kids highlight critical thinking, a soft skill, as the main benefit of learning to code. And many career experts have noted critical thinking is one of the most valuable skills for employability in any field.

Communication

Aside from being the key to a happy marriage, communication is one of the most important workplace skills to have. Communication skills incorporate many different aspects, not limited to the ability to express yourself. Active listening, sharing ideas and building trust and respect are a result of good communication skills.

You can teach your children how to communicate effectively from a very young age. Some of their first encounters with communication are at home with you. How do you communicate? Your children will learn how to build interpersonal skills like trust, respect and listening to watching you.

Problem-solving

Along with listening skills and critical thinking, problem-solving is a key skill to have in the workplace. It’s an asset to any team as it is useful to have and shows great strengths in a person’s adaptability. Someone good at problem-solving is also good at adapting to change. And as they say, change is the only constant in life.

At present, the workplace environment is incredibly fast-paced. Change is inevitable in all areas of life and those who struggle to adapt often get left behind. And the future won’t be any different. A strong problem-solver will always be ahead of any unforeseen changes and can effortlessly shift to fit their environment. Companies like to see this kind of tenacity in potential employees as well.

Empathy

Empathy is the key to good communication and creating lasting interpersonal relationships. It speaks to the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes. In the workplace, it encourages loyalty, morale and productivity among employees.

Empathy is the innate ability to see others’ humanity. It informs your emotional intelligence, which is how you can understand and express your emotions. In addition, emotional intelligence is the key to understanding the emotions of those around you.

Critical thinking

Critical thinking is an important part of making positive life choices. You hope that your children make good decisions. For a couple of childhood years, you have some influence on the choices they make.

But, as they get older, they need to figure some things out on their own. Adolescence will test their critical thinking. They will get stuff wrong all the time, but that’s how they learn about consequences. Critical thinking will help them make sound personal and career choices in their life.
